Career Assessments

Selecting a major, identifying potential careers or exploring career changes can be stressful and confusing, while sorting through all the options. When starting this process, it is important to begin by looking at interests, values and abilities. After identify personal characteristics, the next step is linking them majors or careers; career assessments can help with this process. Career Services uses three different assessments to start the exploratory process or to clarify career goals.

FOCUS v.2

Can help with developing an accurate picture of personal strengths, needs, and preferences; and develop a sound career plan. It uses valid and reliable research based career assessments, and it is used exclusively by more than 1500 career services centers in colleges, human resource management offices and placement offices nationwide. There is no cost to take this online assessment, but a follow-up appointment with a Career Service staff member is recommended after completing FOCUS.

 

Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI)

The Myers-Briggs is the most widely used personality inventory in the world.  It determines an individual's preferences on four dichotomies (Extraversion-Introversion, Sensing-Intuition, Thinking-Feeling, and Judging-Perceiving); resulting in one of sixteen distinct personality types.  This personality type can then be linked to careers.  After taking the assessment please contact Career Services (989.774.3068) to schedule a one hour follow-up appointment to discuss and receive your results.  The $10.00 fee will also be collected at this appointment.

 

Strong Interest Inventory

This assessment measures interests related to a broad range of occupations, work activities, leisure activities and school subjects.  It provides a detailed print-out of interests and how they score on six occupational themes (Realistic, Artistic, Investigative, Conventional, Social and Enterprising.  After taking the assessment please contact Career Services (989.774.3068) to schedule a one hour follow-up appointment to discuss and receive your results.  The $15.00 fee will also be collected at this appointment.
